As a Latina, scent and culinary flavors have always been deeply mingled and intertwined. Vanilla was never just an ingredient, but a way of working with my hands in a feeling of creativity and closeness. Think of a dash of vanilla in arroz con leche or a dust of cinnamon on mazamorra morada.

What I am suggesting here is a shift in perspective, moving from vanilla as a flat, dark, hidden ingredient baking inside a warm kitchen oven, to vanilla as a living, glowing botanical organism growing outside under the sun. This feels like the most logical presentation of vanilla as the natural ingredient it truly is. I realized vanilla wasn't just a single note or a memory of a recipe, but a poetic word in a much larger poem.

There, on the edge of the wild, I perceived a different kind of sweetness, earthy and alive, in sun-warmed woods, the softness of petals, the dry brightness of sunlit grasses, and the sweetness carried by the breeze.
